Where

Authors in 115 countries and territories have built on these papers. A raw count would mostly map where science happens, so each country is shaded by observed ÷ expected: expected is what that country would contribute if it cited in proportion to its total OpenAlex output in each citing work’s field.

Topic cards

34% of citing works (1,100 / 3,230) sit outside Ken's own OpenAlex topics. Cards expand the flow chart above.

Plus a long tail of smaller research areas: 615 citing works (19%). Named domains for that tail are in the flow chart above.

Keyword chips come from citing works (OpenAlex), not from Ken's own papers. Topic labels are automatic and can be noisy — treat single-digit cards as indicative.

Early papers (not charted)

Growth drops 2 citing work(s) whose OpenAlex date is earlier than the paper it cites.

Method

  • Papers: a pinned DOI list synced from the Publications pages. No author-name search (OpenAlex disambiguation splits and merges profiles). In-press papers without a resolving DOI are omitted until the DOI resolves (OpenAlex may lag Crossref).
  • Filter: All includes every pinned DOI. “First / last / corresponding author” is hand-pinned (lens: lead) — OpenAlex is_corresponding is never trusted alone. Corresponding-only flags still need Ken's review where unknown.
  • Self-citations (strict, per cited paper): A citing work is removed if it shares any author with the cited paper (OpenAlex author ID, ORCID, or normalized full name). Applied per cited paper; unique citing works for headlines. Removed in this view: 310 of 3782 citation links.
  • Field & Shelf (section 01): one square per non-self citing OpenAlex work. Colour and centre position encode that citing work's own OpenAlex cited_by_count on a log-ish ember–ink ramp (0 · 1–9 · 10–99 · 100–999 · ≥1,000); nearer the centre means more cited. Direction means nothing. Hover a shelf paper to light its citers and draw a thin link from each; hover a square to show up to four lines back to the papers it cites.
  • Field colour is each citing work's own OpenAlex cited_by_count (same across All / Lead). Where is the observed÷expected country map; Topic cards / Who below use the adaptive OpenAlex taxonomy; any outside-home % elsewhere on the page is labelled with its topic rule.
  • Start at OpenAlex field; split any node holding more than 30% of citing works into children (field → subfield → topic) until no node exceeds that share. Nodes under 2% may fold into Other.
  • Country normalization: Expected citing works per country ≈ sum over citing fields of (country's share of OpenAlex works in that field × citing works in that field), 2012–2026.
  • OpenAlex under-counts Chinese-language venues (e.g. CNKI). Treat China coverage as a lower bound.
  • Every number on this page is from OpenAlex. Google Scholar counts are higher and are shown only on the Publications page; the two are never combined.
  • Refreshed monthly by a GitHub Action; each run is kept as a dated snapshot.
